Foundation stone laid 29th September 1923 by Thomas Simpson of Hepscott Hall, formally opened 24th November 1923 by Col. Sir Joseph Reed.

Memorial Description

Institute. Red brick building, single storey, comprising billiard room, games room and reading room.
On the gable end of the building, which faces the main street, is a stone plaque 3 feet high x 2 feet wide, bearing the names of those who died, all lettering incised in sans serif capitals. Round the corner is another stone plaque 15 inches high x 2 feet wide giving the details of the laying of the foundation stone, all lettering incised in Roman capitals.

How money was raised

Public subscription. Also donation from the Miners' Welfare Fund.

Notes

1. Mr. Simpson received a gold pencil after laying the foundation stone.

2. Col. Reed received a gold pencil case after opening the hall.

3. Mr. Marsh (Hall Committee Chairman) announced, amid applause, that he had a cheque for £25 which he had begged for the Institute, and rather than have them have a mortgage on the building, he was prepared to find another £25. Also, if they care to arrange a billiard handicap before Christmas, he would give them a turkey, goose and cock chicken as prizes”.

4. Mr. Marsh and Sir Joseph played the first game on the billiard table.
