Memorial Description

A half-draped urn on a high pedestal, standing on a double plinth, which in turn stands on a concrete step on a concrete base. The whole is set into a tiny garden with grass and flowers, and enclosed with a white painted iron fence.
On the sides of the high pedestal are slightly tapering raised panels with a shallow pointed top. The dedication from 1914-18, with names listed in two columns, are on the front panel, those from 1939-45 are on the side.
In each case, the lettering is incised and painted white, using Roman capitals throughout.

Public subscription. Site given by Stella Coal Company.

Present condition

Restored 2008 by Gateshead Council.

Ownership and maintenance

Handed over to the Ryton Urban District Council at the unveiling.

Notes

1. In 2008, the wrought iron railings were shot blasted back to the original metal and repainted. The concrete paving has been replaced with natural stone.

2. The site is "near the Co-operative Stores" at the angle of two roads leading into the village.

3. The day of the unveiling was "wet and boisterous" and after the unveiling, the company retired to the school for the rest of the ceremony.

4. At the unveiling, scrolls were presented to relatives by Mr. J. Robson, President of the Durham Miners’ Association.
