Memorial Description

Plaque 24 inches high x 14 inches wide (604mm x 355mm) with dome at centre top on wood pattress wider all round and which echoes the shape. There is a wide border of oak leaves on a black background. At centre top is a cross in red. At the bottom is a wreath with the dates “1914” and “1918” on either side. The names are listed in a single column in Roman capitals, apart from the words “In Loving memory of” which are in Gothic.

Names

Sculptor, Artist or Designer

Supplied and engraved by Mr. R. Fawcett, jeweller and engraver, 10 Clayton Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Except for the border, it was designed by the pastor, Rev. T.E. Corrin.

Notes

1. “Upon it is engraved a cross (symbol of sacrifice); a circle round the stem of the cross (symbol of eternity); a laurel wreath (emblem of rewarded service) and an engraved ivy leaf border (the emblem of memory)".

2. Some of the names differ in the newspaper report:
James H. Heads instead of James R. Heads.
John Heworth instead of John Hurworth.

3. Rev. Enoch Hall was the pastor at the time the men enlisted.

4. It was originally erected in front of the Communion table and below the reading desk.
