Unveiled 23rd October 1921 by Major-General Sir Percy Wilkinson, K.C.M.G., C.B.; dedicated by Rev. W.C.D. Fedden, Vicar of Consett.

Memorial Description

Plaque 2 feet 10 inches high x 4 feet wide fixed to left side wall of entrance. There is a scroll running along the top bearing the quotation in letters raised on a black background. At either side of the tablet is a column topped with a wreath in each of which is the year 1914 in red to the left and 1918 to the right. Each column has a scroll wrapped round with a garland on which the battle honours are named. At centre top of the plaque is the badge of the D.L.I. 6 Battn with the words “Faithful” below. The words “Pro” and “Patria” are in cartouches on each side, with the lettering raised and the background blackened. At the bottom are the words “They answered the call”. The names are listed in four columns. The dedication is in Roman capitals, the names are in sans serif capitals.

Cost of fixing it in the church was met by the D.L.I. funded with no outside help.

Ownership and maintenance

The memorial was to be burnished and lacquered, and maintained thereafter by the D.L.I. after removal to the church.

Notes

1. This area formed one of the traditional recruiting areas for the 6th D.L.I.

2. The report in the Consett Guardian includes the name of Pte. G. Robson twice.

3. There were 249 men in the Detachment, of whom 239 volunteered to go overseas.
