Unveiled 2nd January 1921 by Capt. W. Cochran Carr; dedicated by Rev. G. Candlish Chisholm.

Memorial Description

Roll of Honour. At the top is the Union flag unfurled. The outer border features a circle at top left featuring a battleship, and another top right featuring a cruise ship. There are tricolor flags half way down each side. In the bottom left and right hand corners stands a cannon in each corner, facing outwards. The inner border features figures of soldiers, one at the top, one down each side and two in the bottom. The central panel has two crossed flags at the top with the date "A.D" and "1914" on either side. The names are handwritten in two columns using Gothic script.

On a piece of paper underneath are written the words "The Benwell Presbyterian / Newcastle / "Scrap o' Paper".

Notes

1. The “Scrap of Paper” referred to is the Treaty signed in London in 1839 guarantee ng Belgian neutrality. The signatories were Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, France, Prussia and Russia. The expression came into prominence during a meeting between the German Chancellor and the British Ambassador on the 4th August 1914 just hours before war was declared. The Chancellor, von Bethmann-Hollweg said that 'Britain is going to war over a scrap of paper'
