Triptych with tall gable top, 63 inches high x 60 inches wide (391 mm x 372 mm) when open and 30 inches (186 mm) wide when closed. Inside the gable top is a chalice raised in half relief and painted gold. The doors are carved with a curved arch pattern with trellis above. The dedication is painted on the doors in gold Roman lettering using upper and lower cases. The doors open to reveal ornamental tracery. In the centre is Christ on a gold cross with the two figures of Mary and John raised in half relief at the foot. Round the upper part of the cross is the text “Faithful Unto death, Jesu Mercy” in red letters. Names of those who served are inscribed in two columns on each of the insides of both doors, and those who died are under the crosspiece of the cross and on either side. The names are all written in gold sans serif lettering, with the initials of the regiments in italics.

Notes

1. Faculty allows for 'War shrine western pillar of north aisle arcade oak with figure of Our Lord on the Cross with supporting figures of Mary and St. John, lettering brown outlined in black with names, also "Faithful unto Death" '.

2. This was made from timber from H.M.S. Britannia which was broken up in the yard of Hughes Bolckow.

3. In a booklet presented by Hughes Bolckow to their staff when the firm was taken over in 1961, there is a long piece about the break-up of the "Britannia". The salvaged material went to making up all kinds of things. One sentence reads : "Folding chairs on offer were designed with wounded soldiers in mind ('their high back is very restful, but does not interfere with the hat when seated'); tea trolleys were advertised ('in hospitals and nursing homes they ease the extra work brought by the war'); and there were three patterns of memorial shrine with space for names of up to 150 dead; the names could be added 'in black at a halfpenny a letter, or in gold at a penny a letter'".
