Notes

1. “I am credibly informed there is a war memorial inside, and that it was transferred from their previous premises”. (R.W. Gould)

2. “Its preservation can never be taken for granted as I have learnt from conversations with my friend, the current Co-op Manager, Mr. Hugh McNeill, that the memorial is only on view in its present position because of his own efforts to have it displayed in a suitable place after discovering it some years ago in another position when a false wall was removed. At the time he could not believe that someone had previously covered up the memorial in this fashion! It might have been lost forever if he had not acted as he did”. (Letter from John Nicholls)
