Memorial Description

Plaque 1 foot 6 inches high x 2 feet 6 inches wide set on a dark brown wood pattress which is 3 inches wider all round. At centre top is a design in copper of two angels, one of whom is blowing a trumpet, bearing a wreath encircling the words “For the Fallen”. The names are listed in five columns divided by vertical lines. The lettering for the dedication is in elongated Roman capitals, the names in sans serif capitals.

How money was raised

£2,218 from workmen and officials, £27 by public subscription and £18 from public institutions.

Notes

1. “The money that had been raised . . .had taken some working for. In addition to the memorial tablet sufficient funds had been raised to present watches and medals to men who had won distinction, and 324 men from Browney Colliery who served with His Majesty’s Forces”.

2. Those who won distinctions and were presented with watches were:
Thomas Wilkinson, D.C.M.;
C. Anderson, M.M.;
M. Hanley M.M. (deceased).
Cpl. T. Reaveley , D.L.I. received the MM and bar; Pte. J. Smith, M.M., deceased. There was nobody present to receive the medal on his behalf .
Pte. S. Culley, M.M. deceased. His son collected his medal.
A. Guyll, M.M., deceased. His son collected his medal.
Pte. C. Todd, deceased, Croix de Guerre. His father collected his medal.
Pte. H. Huntley, M.M.
Pte. Jos. Robinson, M.M.

3. In addition to the memorial, the workmen and officials raised £341 for Red Cross Ambulance Fund. They spent £271.17s.3d on materials for garments; they sent £440 to the Prince of Wales Fund; they gave grants of £70 to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Families’ Association; they gave £1,239.14.3d in house rent allowance and grants to soldiers’ wives and families; £127.6s in goods to soldiers’ dependents; £187.15s in grants to widows and orphans.

4. The Ladies’ Working Party sent over 2,000 garments to soldiers at the front; through Lady Bell they sent 603 shirts, 357 socks, 126 mufflers etc. to general hospitals. To their own men they sent 130 shirts; 241 socks and mufflers, etc.
