Photo Cooper V.C. 1917 Bailey Street Boys School
Handed over 28th February 1921 by Ald. F.T. Nattrass, temporary Chairman of the Education Committee
(Lieut. Cooper, V.C.)
(Lieut. Cooper, V.C.)
1. Lieut. Cooper was a former pupil at the school. He spoke at this ceremony, paying tribute to the training he had received from Mr. J. Potts, the headmaster, who was also retiring that day at the end of 40 years’ service at the school.
2. “With regard to the photograph, the committee felt that the circumstances merited the recognition of so important a chapter in the history of the school. Lieut. Cooper had brought distinction to the town, and Bailey Street School could claim reflected glory is his achievement. He hoped that the photograph would prove a stimulus to the boys of the future to do their best no matter what the circumstances might be. There were other ways of distinguishing themselves other than through the war”
