Notes

1. “The East Howdon War Memorial, standing at the corner of a plot of land just above Gallant Terrace is in such a bad condition that it would be a kindness to people who lost near relatives in the service of the country, to have the erection removed or renovated at once.
I do not know who is responsible for its upkeep, but it looks as though it is in nobody’s care. I very much doubt if a worse example of lack of reverence for Great War heroes can be seen anywhere. Names on the roll are quite distinct. The roll is fixed in a picture frame and the whole is encased in a wood framework, which is in a dilapidated condition; the glass has been shattered and the jagged pieces remain, while other parts, including the vases at each side, are rusted” Shields Evening News Friday 10/06/1938.

2. “I visited the site today (18th June 1991) and can find no trace of this memorial” R.W. Gould

3. Easten was the name of a builder whose firm still operates.

4. Dr. Gould points out that the Electoral Register for 1911 shows 195 names, which means that the 177 names on the Roll of Honour represents 60% of the East Howdon population served in the 1914-18 war.

5. “The Roll of Honour for the East Howdon Heroes in the Great War 1914-1919 seems to have been erected next to a shop on Gallant Terrace, which faces Easten Terrace on the other side of the Howdon Road. On the photograph none of the people are named. Furthermore, even under magnification, it is not possible to read the names on the poster.
However, the poster seems to have 5 columns, with up to 24 lines in each. This is too short to include all the Borough’s casualties. It is possible that the Roll lists all those from East Howdon who actually served.
Dr. Gould, of North Shields, contributed a considerable body of work to the local section of the Imperial War Museum’s recent project to track down monuments, rolls of honour, and other memorials. Copies of the results are available in the North Tyneside Local Studies Centre, and the work is continuing as less publicly accessible sources come to light.
If anyone knows what became of the East Howdon memorial, or of anything similar, please ring 0191 200 5424, and ask for Local Studies, or leave a message at any branch of the North Tyneside Libraries.” News Guardian 01/03/1997
