Armstrong, J.W., L/Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of S/136578 Lance Corporal John Wilson Armstrong, serving with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, who died 18/08/1916.

Morpeth Herald 19/01/1917 carries a brief obituary:
Mr and Mrs W. Armstrong, 23 [sic] Northumberland Terrace, Backworth, have received official news that their son, Lance-Corporal J.W. Armstrong, Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action on August 18th, 1916.

In 1911 aged 18 he was a barman. His father Wilson, aged 40, born in North Shields, was a coal miner (Master Shifter). His mother, Mabel Emma Armstrong, aged 39, also born in North Shields, had three children, two of whom had survived. John's brother Edward was now aged 8 and was born in West Allotment. They lived at 33 Northumberland Terrace, Backworth.

John Wilson Armstrong is remembered in Backworth B1.01 and B1.03 and in Holystone on H145.01
