On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/860 Private James Taylor serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James Taylor was born at Tweedmouth, Northumberland in 1888, being recorded as James Johnson Taylor in the birth records. His parents were John Taylor, born at Kyloe, Northumberland, and Williamson Taylor (nee Johnson) from Tweedmouth. His mother appears to use forename Jane (see CWGC record).

In 1891, the Taylor family lived at South Orchard, Ord, Northumberland, when James was two years old. His father was employed as an agricultural labourer and the following siblings were in the household: Mary 19, Thomas 17, John 14 and Joshua aged 10. James’s mother died in 1893.

The 1901 Census shows James living at Lowick, Glendale Northumberland. The record confirms his father was a widower and working as a farm hand. At this time James was 13 and brothers Thomas and George are in the house.

James in 1911 was living at Red Row, Bedlington in his father’s house. Note there is an error in the 1911 Census with the age of his father which records his age as 53 when in fact it should be 62. James was single, aged 21, and employed as a horse keeper underground in the coal mines. His father was now a colliery labourer. Later in the same year Thomas married Margaret Summers which was registered at Morpeth.

Military records show James enlisted at Bedlington and his Pension Index Card documents his wife Margaret and children Edward Summers and John. CWGC information shows he was the son of the late John and Jane Taylor and husband of Margaret Taylor, of 24 Kings Road, Bedlington Station.

James Taylor is remembered in Stakeford on S71.02, in North Seaton on N33.03 and in Choppington on C36.01
