Hughes, W., Sgt., 1916

In St. John's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1866 Serjeant W. Hughes, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 13/08/1916.

The family headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Walter Hughes, Sergt. of the 7th N.F.
Dearly beloved husband of Bessie Hughes,
Who was accidentally killed at Woodhorn Colliery
Augt. 13th 1916, aged 38 years.
Also of Isaac Charles, their son who died
May 19th 1913, aged 1½ years

Margaret Allison reports that he lived at 146½ Hawthorn Road, Ashington with his wife Bessie.

Walter Hughes is remembered in Ashington on A17.43 and in Hirst on H62.10
