On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/623 Private Albert Wood, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Albert Wood was born at Blyth Northumberland about 1894. His parents were William Wood, a coal miner from Darlington and Hannah Wood, nee Foggin, from Seaham Harbour, County Durham.

In 1901 Albert was living at Back Disraeli Street Blyth with family. At this time he was 7 years old and the following siblings Thomas 10, Edward 4 and Elizabeth 1 were in the household.

The 1911 Census shows his family had moved to 6, New Row, Cambois where, at the age of 17, Albert was working as a putter in the coal mines. Siblings at this address now include Margaret, John, Joseph and Hannah.

Albert was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
