Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

William Elliott was born in Spittal, near Berwick upon Tweed in 1875. He was baptised William Henry Swinney Elliott on 30 May 1875 at Tweedmouth, Northumberland. His parents were Joseph Elliott, from Spittal and Margaret Elliott from Berwick upon Tweed.

In 1881, the Elliott family lived at 57, Middle Street, Tweedmouth Northumberland. At this time William was six years old.

The 1891 Census shows William to be 16 years old and the family still living at Tweedmouth. William’s father was recorded as being a fisherman and William was employed as a coal miner. His family at this time totals eleven people in the household.

When William was 25 years old in 1901 he was living at Boca Chica, Cambois, in his parents’ house along with brothers John, 6, and sisters Maggie, 6 and Mary 33. His father was shown as a fisherman and William was a coal miner. In 1909 his father died.

In the 1911 Census William was living at 14, Boca Chica, Cambois, the house of his brother in law. He was single at this time and working as a colliery labourer. Also in the house was his widowed mother who was 73.

Military records show William enlisted in London and CWGC documents confirm he was the son of Joseph and Margaret Elliott.

William Elliott is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
