Manchester Regiment

Medal Card

On the Pozieres Memorial is the name of 44783 Private John Morrison, serving with the Manchester Regiment (2nd / 7th Battalion) who died 21/03/1918.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

John was born at Cambois, Northumberland in 1896 to parents James Morrison born in Blyth, Northumberland and Alice Morrison born in Norfolk.

In 1901 John’s family lived at Boca Chica, Cambois.

The 1911 Census shows John living with his parents at 8, Boca Chica, Cambois, where his father was a hewer in the coal mines. At this time John was 14 years old and also working in the mines as a pit boy. Also in the house were siblings Mary 21, James 18, and Simon 16.

Census reports in 1901, 1911 and military documents show John as John F. There is a birth record in Q4 1896 for a John Forster Morrison registered at Morpeth, Northumberland, which suggests Foster is his middle name.

Military records show John enlisted at Blyth, Northumberland while living at Cambois. Although serving with the Manchester Regiment at the time of his death he had previously served with the Durham Light Infantry with the service number 39742.

On his death his effects went to his father which indicates John was not married. CWGC information shows he was the son of James and Alice Morrison of 4, Forster Memorial Homes, Cowpen Colliery Northumberland.

John Forster Morrison is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
