In Dantzig Alley British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16/1716 Private Thomas Robertson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (1st Battalion) who died 17/08/1916.

Thomas Robertson was born in at Cambois Northumberland in 1882 to parents David Robertson, a coal miner from Spittal in Northumberland and Alice Robertson who was born at East Sleekburn, near Bedlington in the same county. In some records Thomas has a middle name of Crymer or sometimes Cremar.

In 1891 Thomas, aged 8, was living at 29, Boca Chica Cambois in his parents’ house with siblings Anne Bell 13, John 11, Alice Ann 6, David and William who was four months old.

The Robertson family was still living at Boca Chica (house number not available) in 1901 where Thomas, now 18, was working in the coal mines as a hewer. The family at this time included additional siblings Jane, Sarah, Mary, Ellen and George.

Thomas married Annie Ash from Blyth in March 1903 and in 1911 he was living at 11, Bridge Street Cambois with daughter Alice, born in 1904, son David, born 1906 and daughter Annie, born 1915.

Military records show that Thomas Robertson enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers at Blyth, Northumberland on 7th September 1914. His military records are available on Ancestry and show his service number to be 50883. Thomas was 32 years and 5 months at this time and is shown to be a miner. He was 5ft 6˝ ins. tall, weighed 10 stone 6 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Thomas was medically unfit and discharged in November 1914.

When conscription began in 1916 Thomas enlisted at Cramlington Northumberland into the Northumberland Fusiliers with the service number 16/1716 and died of his wounds on 1916. His military records show he was possibly living at Westergate (Watergate) Cambois about the time he enlisted.
