Bound, H.L., Pte., 1916

In Ridge Wood Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War grave for 836 Private Herbert Leonard Bound, serving with the Northumberland Division Cyclist Company (Army Cyclist Corps) who died 18/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Herbert Leonard Bound was born in Cheshire in 1894 and baptised on the 14th February of that year. His parents were Charles Bound, a cartman who was born in York and Ellen Bound (nee Bayne) born in Musselburgh, Scotland.

In 1901, the Bound family lived at Barnsley, Yorkshire where the census records show there were, in addition to Leonard who was five years old, siblings Cecil 8, John 5, Margery 4 and Ethel aged one. In 1902 Leonard's father died and his mother Ellen was later to marry George Beckett, a railway engine driver from York.

In the 1911 Census Leonard was living at 16, Gray Street, North Blyth Northumberland with his mother and stepfather. Leonard at this time was working in the coal mines as a pony driver, aged 16.

Leonard’s military records are available and show he enlisted at Blyth, Northumberland when living at 16, Gray Street in April 1914. His service took him to France on 8th August 1915. Leonard did not marry and his effects went to his mother Ellen (Helen) Beckett.
