BEDLINGTON STATION

Brooks, D., L/Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 13663 Lance Corporal David Brooks, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 17/09/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

David was born in 1898, the 13th child of James and Ellenor Brooks of Scotland Gate. His father died in 1910, and in 1911 David was working as a putter in the coal mine. His mother re-married and they lived at Walker Terrace, Bedlington.

He died in the second phase of the Battle of the Somme, and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. As he was a Lance Corporal when he died shortly after his 18th birthday it is likely that he lied about his age when he enlisted. His older brother Andrew is also listed on St John's Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04
