Gill, M., Pte., 1918
In Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23464 Private Matthew Gill serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 12/05/1918.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Matthew was born in Throckley, Newcastle, in 1875 and he was 42 when he died. He was the youngest child of Matthew, a miner, and Hannah. The 1901 census shows young Matthew boarding in Alnwick and working as a labourer in a stone quarry. He married Mary Moffatt in 1905 and their eldest child Mary Jane was born in Alnwick the following year. The family then moved to Bedlington where their other three children were born; Robert (1909), Samuel (1913) and Catherine (1916). Matthew and his family lived at 8, Back Clayton Street, Bedlington Station, Matthew enlisted in 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, who went to France in January 1915 but were sent to Salonica in November of that year. Matthew died of his wounds on 12th May 1918 and is buried in Mikra Cemetery on the outskirts of Thessaloniki.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04
