Fenwick John Cowans was born in Bedlington in 1896 to Edward and Sarah Jane Cowans. The family lived Bedlington Bank Top in 1901 and 1911. Edward was a miner. John joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and was probably wounded in the Battle of the Somme. He died of wounds in hospital at St. Albans on 23rd August 1916. He was buried in Choppington because his parents had moved from Bedlington to Barrington.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Choppington on C36.01
