Joseph Riddell was born about 1894 at Bedlington, the son of Thomas, a banksman working on the surface in the coal mines, and Ellen Riddell. Both parents were born in Bedlington.

In 1901 Joseph was six and living at Telephone Row, Bedlington with his parents and siblings James 16, Thomas 14, John 11 and Fred aged one.

His family was living at 22, Shiney Row, Bedlington in 1911 in four rooms. Joseph at this time was sixteen and working in the coal mines as a stone putter. Records show he married his wife Elizabeth Shipley probably at the beginning of 1915.

Joseph enlisted at Bedlington while living at 22, Shiney Row, Bedlington. CWGC records confirm he was the husband of Elizabeth Riddell and his effects went to his widow who was living at of Taylors Buildings, Red Row Bedlington after his death. It should be noted the records use Riddell and Riddle versions of the surname.
