In St.Cuthbert's Churchyard is a family headstone for Young which reads:

In loving memory of
John William Young
dear husband of Annie
died 1st Dec. 1967, aged 71 years.
Annie Young (nee Simpson)
a beloved wife and mother
died 8th April 1991, aged 94 years.
Sweet Jesus I come.
Also our dear son
Eric Young
Warrant Officer D.F.M., R.A.F.V.R.,
30th Nov. 1944 aged 23 years
interred Reichswald Forest
Mil. Cemetery, Germany”.

Loved and remembered.

The News Post Leader 16/07/1998 carries an old photo of Warrant Officer Eric Young. He was on "several cloak-and-dagger missions with the Special Operations Executive and was wounded in a raid on Kassel after which he was awarded the DFM. He took part in thirty missions before being killed in action in November, 1944. His father and mother received his medal from King George VI at Buckingham Palace in May 1946".

W/O Young was serving with 115 Sqdn. He was a crew member of Lancaster I PD367 KO-H which took off from Witchford on a mission to Osterfeld. The aircraft was hit by flak and crashed with great force.
W/O Young had previously served with 90 Sqdn. His D.F.M. was gazetted on 23/05/1944.
