Derek Johnstone has provided the following:
Robert Peebles was born in 1898 to parents George Robert Peebles from Morpeth, Northumberland, and Dorothy Peebles (nee Wilkes) from Seaton Burn in the same county.
In 1901 the Peebles family lived at East Terrace, Seaton Burn where his father was a bar manager.
The 1911 Census records the family still at Seaton Burn when Robert was 13 years old living with 6 siblings. At this time his father was a stoneman in the coal mines. The photo for Robert shows a link with Netherton so it’s possible he went there after 1911 to work in the coal mines.
CWGC records show he was son of George Robert and Dorothy C Peebles of 222, Newburn Road Newburn on Tyne. Military documents record he enlisted at Prudhoe, Northumberland. His effects went to his father George Robert Peebles indicating he would not have been married.
Robert went to France 20th April 1915 and was attached to the 149th Brigade Machine Gun Corps. He was only 18 years old when he died. He was awarded 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Robert Peebles is remembered in Bedlington on B15.09
