James Clarkson Docherty was born at Bedlington to parents Samuel and Robina Docherty in 1884. By 1901 his father was already dead and his mother Robina, a confectioner, was head of household at Front Street, Bedlington. James had three brothers at this time, William 23, Allen 11, and Samuel aged 9. The 1901 Census shows James living as a boarder at 29, Lambert Square, Gosforth working as a hewer in the coal mines.
In 1905 James married Isabella Tully which was registered at Tynemouth, Northumberland. By 1911 records show James is living at Ridge Terrace, Bedlington with three children Allan 5, Dorothy 3 and Rolina aged 1. There were other children later, including Marion b. 1911, Matilda b. 1913, Samuel b.1915 and Isabella b. 1916.
James enlisted at Bedlington when living at Ridge Terrace and was killed in the run-up to the Battle of the Somme.
After James died, leaving seven children, his CWGC records show his wife Isabella was still living at Ridge Terrace, Bedlington.
