Derek Johnstone has provided the following information:
John Redpath was born in Bedlington, Northumberland in 1882 to parents Hugh, a mine deputy at Choppington Pit and Isabella Redpath (nee Barnfather).
In 1891, John was living with parents at Pease Bush, Choppington near Bedlington with siblings Tamar 20, William 17, Nicholas 14, James 9, Hugh 2 and Fred aged 1. John’s mother Isabella died in 1895.
The 1901 Census shows John’s family living at Choppington New Pit. John was now 18 and working as a miner underground. Also in house are brothers Fenwick 15, Hugh 12, and Frederick 10.
John married Elizabeth White from Skelmersdale, Lancashire at Morpeth In 1905.
In 1911, John, who was still working in the coal mines, was the head of the household at Choppington, Northumberland with his wife Elizabeth and their four children John Williams 7, Isabella 5, Eveline 2 and Norman aged one.
John enlisted at Bedlington when living at Sunnyside, Choppington John probably went to France in September 1915. No details could be located as to how he gained his Military Medal and Bar.
His effects went to his widow Elizabeth after his death.
