McKenzie, MacKenzie, M., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/636 Private Michael McKenzie, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Michael McKenzie was born at Bedlington in 1884 and was the son of William and Mary McKenzie. His father William, a coal miner was born at Widdrington and his mother Mary born at Bedlington. At the age of seven, in 1891, his family was living at Pegswood near Morpeth in Northumberland. In 1901 Michael was aged 18, employed as a miner and a boarder with a family called Wren at Pont Terrace, Woodhorn Ashington.

Michael was married in 1902 to Rose Biddy, which was registered at Morpeth.

The 1911 Census shows he was 27 years old, married to Rose who was born in Tillingham, Essex and living at 250, Yard Row, Netherton where he was a miner. At this time they had the following children: William 8, James, 7; Hannah and John Henry aged 3.

Michael enlisted at Newcastle when living at 250, Yard Row, Netherton.

The CWGC records show Michael's surname spelt as Mackenzie, however all other records used the name McKenzie. After his death his effects amounting to £2 16s 3d + £6 10s 0d went to his widow Rose.

Michael McKenzie is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 119 and in Barrington on B96.02
