Mavin, A., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/595 Private Anthony Mavin serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 17/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

MAVIN.- Killed in action, July 1st, 1916, Private Anty [sic] Mavin (595, N.F.), the dearly beloved husband of Maggie Mavin, of 16 Old Colliery Row, Bedlington. – (Sadly missed and deeply mourned by his sorrowing wife and 3 children). Also my brother, Private James Gray, died of wounds, July 2nd. (Ever remembered by his sister Maggie, and children).

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Anthony Mavin was born at Bedlington Northumberland in 1881 to parents Robert, a coal miner and Jane Mavin (nee Leatherd). In 1881, when Anthony was only three months old his family was living at Front Street, Bedlington.

In 1891, aged 10, Anthony lived in his uncle Thomas Low's house.

In 1901, he was living at Bells Place, Bedlington in the house of his widowed grandmother, Ann Mavin. At this time Anthony was 20 and working as a coal hewer.

Anthony married Margaret Ellen Gray in 1904 and in 1911 they were living at Tankerville Yard, Bedlington in one room with his family which included Jane Leathard, William and Emily.

Anthony enlisted at Bedlington when living at Foggan’s Yard in the same town. On his death his effects went to his widow Margaret.
