Derek Johnstone has provided the following:
John Kennedy Mason was born in Maryport, Cumberland in 1880 and was the son of John Kennedy and Ellen (Eleanor) Mason, nee Goodwin. His father was a sailor and then a labourer in a tannery.
In 1881 John was living at Maryport, Cumberland with siblings Mary 2, Ellen 5 and Edward aged 8. When aged 12 he was living with his family at Stainburn, Cumberland.
John married his wife Sarah Ann Marling in 1908 at Durham and in 1911 he was living with his family at 15, Charlotte Street, Wallsend. John enlisted at Newcastle and the records show that by this time he was living a Fairbairn’s Yard, Bedlington. Records show after his death his effects went to his widow who by this time had remarried. CWGC states that she was now Sarah Annie Osselton, (formally Mason), of 5, Weir Street, Wallsend.
