William Jefferson, the son of John and Barbara Hoy Taylor Jefferson, was born in 1895 at Bedlington, Northumberland. In 1901 his family, which included nine children, was living at Telephone Row, Bedlington, a colliery row situated adjacent to the Doctor Pit. In 1911, William was 16 years old and working in the coal mines as a rope boy living with his parents at 48, North Terrace, Bedlington.
He enlisted at Newcastle when living at North Terrace, Bedlington and was wounded in action on the 17th August 1917, aged 22 years, dying the following day. On his death his effects went to his father, indicating he was not married.
Sadly his brother Henry was also killed in action as was his brother Christopher , making a total of three sons lost from one family during the 1914 – 1918 War.
He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06, B15.20 and B15.26 page 83
