Albert McCabe was born in 1897 at Hirst, Woodhorn, Ashington. His parents were Thomas and Jane Isabel (nee Hogg) McCabe. His father’s first wife, Hannah A Hogg, died in 1893 and he then married her sister Jane Isabella Hogg in 1896.

In 1901 when Albert was about 4 he was living at 16, Chestnut Street, Hirst, Ashington, with his half-brothers: William, aged 11 and John, aged 5. By 1911 Albert was 14 and was working underground in the coal mines as a pony driver. When he enlisted he was living at Vulcan Place, Bedlington.
