Dowie, J.G., Pte., M.M., 1917

In Mendinghem Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 19871 Private Joseph George Dowie M.M. serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (11th Battalion) who died 12/06/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Joseph George Dowie was born at Sunderland in 1890 to parents John Dowie, born at Netherton and Isabella Dowie born at Bothal near Morpeth. Joseph was one of eight children born to his parents as recorded in the 1901 Census including a brother Andrew Dowie who was killed in action on 1st July 1916.

The 1911 Census shows he was 21 years old, single and working as a coal miner. Joseph enlisted when living at 19, Third Street, Netherton, was wounded on the 8th June and died on the 12th June 1917. There were no records to show he was married. On his gravestone is the following inscription, ‘Father in thy gracious keeping leave we now they servant sleeping’
