BEDLINGTON

Reed, J., L/Cpl., 1918
In St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16074 Lance Corporal James Read serving with 10th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 12/10/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following;

James was born 23rd October 1887 in Widdrington, the eldest child of George Reed and his wife Elizabeth. In 1891 the family were living at Buller's Green in Morpeth, but by 1901 they had moved to Scotland Gate and in 1911 they were living at Freehold Terrace, Stakeford. James followed his father and became a surface labourer at the pit. James married Mary Ann Hilton in 1911 and they had a daughter Edith in the following year. I cannot find whether the couple emigrated after Edith's birth in 1912, and James returned to England to fight, or whether Mary emigrated to Canada after James's death.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02 and B15.06
