BEDLINGTON

Percy, J.J., Pte., 1917
In Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), West Flanders, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23467 Private John James Percy serving with 13th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 07/06/1917.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

John's military record shows that he was born and enlisted in Bedlington. Although serving with the Durham Light Infantry at the time of his death he was formerly number 3987 in the Northumberland Fusiliers. His legatee was his mother Rose, which would indicate that he wasn't married.

John was born in Horton near Bedlington in 1891, the eldest child of William and Rose Percy. His father was a hewer from Scremerston, and in 1901 the family were living at 59, Howard Row, Netherton Colliery. The family moved around the Bedlington area in search of work, and in 1911 they were living at 2, Double Row, Barrington Colliery, and John was working down the pit as a pony putter.

He is remembered in Barrington on B96.02, in Bedlington on B15.06, B15.11 (where his name is given as "Piercy") and B15.17 (where his name is given as "Piercey") and in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 144
