ROLL OF HONOUR

SANDERSON.- Killed in action, October 26th, 1917, aged 28 years, Private John Sanderson, Northumberland Fusiliers, No.201939, the beloved son of Jane Ellen and the late John Sanderson, of No.18 Inners House, Mill Bank Crescent, Bedlington, and grandson of the late William and Anne Walker of Doctor Terrace, Bedlington.

Morpeth Herald 30/11/1917 carries the following:

The death of Private John Sanderson, at the age of 23, in action, is reported. He resided at Milbank Crescent, Bedlington, and was a fine violinist. He was employed as a joiner at the Bedlington Colliery.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

John's military record shows that he was born in Bedlington and enlisted in Newcastle. John was born in 1894, the son of John and Jane Eleanor, nee Walker. John appears to be the youngest of four children and his father died before 1911 (probably 1908). In the 1901 census John was living at Doctor Terrace, Bedlington with his maternal grandparents and his older sister Bella. In 1911 he was living at Millbank Crescent with his mother, brother William and sister Elizabeth. Unlike most young men of the area, John did not go to work at the pit. In 1911 his brother was a butcher at the Co-op and John was a joiner's apprentice.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.20 and in B15.26 page 134
