Joseph was born in the summer of 1896, one of 11 children to Joseph and Elizabeth Brady. His father was a baker and confectioner who later became a miner, as did Joseph. In 1901 the family were living at Bedlington Market Place but by 1911 they had moved to Burdon Terrace, and they later moved to 16 Plessey Street, Netherton Colliery.
