On the Helles Memorial is the name of 8260 Private Thomas Henry McKenna, serving with the 8th Battalion (Service) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 20/08/1915.

Thomas Henry McKenna was born on the 31st December 1894, in Ashington. He was the eldest son of father Henry McKenna (who was serving in the 8th Labour Battalion of the Royal Engineers), and his wife Ada (182 Parker Street, Byker) daughter of Thomas Clifford.

[Henry's father had served in the South African War 1901-02 under General Baden Powell, with the South African Constabulary].

Henry was educated at the Sheffield Church Day School. He then was a putter at the Rising Sun Colliery Wallsend. In the 1911 census, he states his job as a Driver in a coalmine.

He enlisted on the 10th September 1914, and was sent to the Dardanelles on the 1st July 1915.

He died on the Hospital Ship H.M.H.S. Delta on the 21st August of wounds received at Suvla Bay on the 19th August.
