Hugh Lee Pattinson ('Foulus') was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 21st August 1888, the eldest son of Hugh Lee Pattinson, of Lowlynn, Beal, Northumberland, and his wife Mary Constance, daughter of Lawrence W. Adamson.

Hugh Lee was gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers on the 6th February 1909, promoted to Lieutenant on 14th February 1914, as Temporary Captain on 28th September 1914, and finally Captain on the 9th March 1915.

He returned to England, on leave in May 1914. In August 1914 he was posted as Adjutant to the 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers which was sent to France on 31st May. He was killed in action at Houplines whilst superintending a working party in the Communication trenches.

Brigadier-General Barradaile wrote:- His loss will be severely felt in the Battalion, in forming which he took such a large and conspicuous share, and also in the Brigade, as his qualifications as a soldier were exceptional, and had be been spared he would have made his mark.

The Major commanding the Battalion, wrote I should like you to know that this is an irreparable loss to the Regiment, and particularly to this Battalion. Taken all round he was the most efficient fellow I have ever worked with. and a brother officer wrote:- He was a splendid soldier, absolutely fearless, and loved by both officers and men.

De Ruvigny Roll of Honour

Nick Pattinson, great-nephew, has submitted the following:

A little extra info on Hugh Lee Pattinson. The article indicates that he was nicknamed "Foulus". While true, this is incomplete: he was called Foulus by his wife's family. Within his own family, he was always known as "Tersh", short for "Tertius" ("The third" in Latin.) And this is odd because he was actually the fourth Hugh Lee Pattinson, so why not "Quartus"? Because, at the time of his birth, he became the third Hugh Lee Pattinson to be alive at the time.

Hugh Lee Pattinson is remembered at Kyloe on K18.01
