In St. Cuthbert’s Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

Erected
in loving memory of
Thomas Staward Spence
who died at Panama Cottage
July 12th 1898
Aged 49 years.
Also Agnes Smith, wife of
T.W. Hutchinson and neice
of the above who died at
Panama Cottage,
16th Jan, 1898, aged 28 years
Pte. Andrew S. Hutchinson, K.O.S.B.
their son, who died 3rd Sept. 1914
aged 19 years.
Sap. Thomas Hutchinson, R.E.
killed in action in France 26th Mar.
1918, aged 24 years.
