Ploegsteert Memorial
Ian Sim has provided the following:
Edward was born in 1890 and lived with his widowed father, his sister Agnes, and uncle Hugh, at 6, The Village, Beadnell. His father was described in the 1911 census as a grocer whilst Edward and Hugh are described as general carters.
The battalion went to France in January 1916 and fought in various battles, including the 3rd. Ypres, before later getting involved in the heavy fighting around the town of St. Quentin and for the Kemmel Ridge in the valley of the River Lys. These engagements were particularly intense and took place from the beginning of April 1918 into May. Along with many of his comrades Edward was killed, on the 14th April, in a German counter attack. The battalion’s casualties were so heavy that it was reduced to cadre strength (too depleted to be able to function) and was withdrawn from the front in May 1918.
Edward’s body was never recovered and his name is recorded on the Ploegsteert Memorial at Comines-Warneton, Hainat, Belgium.
Edward Patterson is remembered at Beadnell on B10.01 and B10.02
