On the Arras Memorial, France, is the name of 235171 Corporal Joseph Robert Hall serving with the 26th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 05/06/1917.

In Shilbottle St.James's Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Elizabeth Margaret
beloved daughter of
Joseph & Margaret Hall
who died at Byker Dec. 27 1886
aged 2 years.
Also of Ethel, their daughter
who died in Alnwick Infirmary
Nov. 6 1912 aged 21 years.
Also of Joseph Robert, their son
Corporal 26 N.F. who was killed
at the Battle of Messines, France
June 5 1917, aged 26 years.
No one could die for a nobler cause.
