Thornton, W.T., 2nd Lt., 1916

Thorntom card: Tony Henfrey

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant Wilfred Thomas Thornton, serving with the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) who died 30/07/1916.

In Biddlestone Chapel is an In Memoriam card which reads:

Of your Charity
Pray for the repose of the soul of
Wilfred Thornton
(2nd Lieut. Black Watch)
Killed in action in France
On Monday, 31st July 1916.

Michael Clark has submitted the following:
"2nd Lieut. Wilfred Thomas Thornton (1st May 1888-30th July 1916) was the nephew of John Joseph Calder (1868-1962) the prominent brewer and James Charles Calder (1869-1962) a significant figure in the whisky and spirit business.

Incidentally, his cousin James Calder, (1895-1945) a Captain in the 1st Lovat Scouts, was awarded the Military Cross for valour at Hill 60 in the Ypres salient area during World War One. I'm not certain when, as I've been unable to determine precise details.

James' father, John J.Calder purchased a half share in the land after the war and bequeathed it to the nation in 1930. It is now a memorial administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

I do not have any images of 2nd Lieut. Thornton unfortunately.

I'm not sure why he would have served in the Black Watch as his family on his father's side was from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. His mother's family was based in Alloa (where their brewery was located) and they had an estate at Ardagie, Forgandenny, near to Perth."
