Ron Carson has provided the following:
Robert was born in about 1894 at Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of John Thomas and Margaret Hay of 34 Rosedale Street, Shieldfield, Newcastle.
Prior to enlisting, Robert was living in Wooler, Northumberland.
He enlisted at Newcastle with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in action on 13 December 1917, aged 23.
Robert Armstrong is remembered in the Battalion History page 29.
