Curran, J., A/Sman, 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of KP/700 Able Seaman Joseph Curran, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 14/06/1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Joseph was born on 30th July 1892 and was working as a miner living with his wife, Emily at 32, Liverpool Street, Newcastle upon Tyne when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 7th September 1914.

After transferring to the RNVR on 10th September 1914 he joined the Anson Division on 16th January 1915.

Joseph was posted as missing assumed killed in Gallipoli on 4th June 1915. A/Smn J. Thomas reported "Curran advanced with me on 4th June and we got into the Turkish trench together. There he was shot through the side and could not move. He was badly hit and when the Turks advanced we had to retire and leave him."
