On the Le Touret Memorial is the name of 10176 Private John Robert Hetherington, serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 25/01/1915.

John Robert Hetherington was born in Spital Tongues on the 5th May 1896. He was the son of Joseph Hetherington, of 49 Ancrum Street, Spital Tongues, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his wife, Frances daughter of William Pallan.

John was educated at the Newcastle Council School and enlisted on the 5th June 1913, was sent to France on the 8th October 1914.

He was reported missing after the fighting for Givenchy, 25th January 1915.

Confirmation of his death was received in June, when Sergeant F. Millman reported that he had been by his side when he was mortally wounded and added,he was a fine type of manhood and a credit to the regiment. He was unmarried.
