Brown, J.J., Sgt., 1914

In Newcastle-upon-Tyne (St.Andrew’s and Jesmond) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 94855 Serjeant James John Brown serving with the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 02/09/1914.

The headstone reads:

In loving Memory of
Sergt. J.J. Brown
Coldstream Guards
who died 2nd September 1914
aged 40 years.
Herbert William
Son of the above who died
Decr. 17th 1920 aged 19 years.

He was 94855 Sergeant James John Brown, Coldstream Guards, aged 40 years. He was attached to the 6th Batt. N.F. (T). 37, Ancrum Street, Spital Tongues. He died in St George's Drill Hall on 2nd September 1914.

The Union Workhouse Coroner's Report No. 324, 03/09/1914 reads:

"Deceased committed suicide by shooting himself in the head whilst in a depressed state of mind".

He was the husband of Annie Brown, of 197, Philip Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne. He had served in the South African Campaign and had been awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
