In Newburn (Lemington) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 51883 Sapper Thomas Scott serving with the Royal Engineers, who died 06/03/1917.

The headstone reads:

In ever loving
memory of
Thomas
dearly loved son of
William and Margaret E Scott
The Orchard, Lemington
who departed this life 6th March 1917,
aged 29 years
joined the Royal Engineers, Sept. 8th 1914.
also of Margaret Eleanor Scott
the dearly beloved wife of
William Scott,
who died September 3rd 1925, aged 67 years.
“who gave her life in the spirit of perfect love”.

Thomas was the son of William and Margaret Eleanor of The Orchard, Lemington. He was an Architect and Surveyor by trade. He enlisted at Whitley Bay on 8th September 1914, serving with the 32nd Signal Co. and was discharged as medically unfit on 25th May 1915, due to Pulmonary Laryngeal Tuberculosis (disease of the Larynx) which after many colds suffered during active service left him with a whisper to his voice.
