Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Edward was born on 12th February 1896. He was working as an apprentice riveter, living with his mother, Mary Jane at 7, Mill Street, Newcastle upon Tyne when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 18th December 1914.

In his papers is the comment that he "has 2 black warts on left side of stomach due to a mouse bite when a baby".

Edward was not drafted until 12th December 1916 when he joined the Nelson Battalion in France. He was hospitalised with Syphillis on 17th January 1917 and rejoined the Nelson Battalion on 3rd April 1917.

Edward was severely wounded by a gun shot wound to the chest and was invalided to the UK on 14th May 1917.

He was posted to the Crystal Palace Depot on 2nd November 1917 and died of disease on 30th June 1918.

The name of Edward Mackin does not appear on any local memorial.
