In Benwell (St.James) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

80981 Driver
R. Walpole
Royal Field Artillery
29th November 1916 age 39.

The Geordie at War Project states:

“The Divisional Ammunition Column was responsible for carrying ammunition from dumps in the rear areas up to the gun batteries.

Little is known about the circumstances of Driver Reginald Walpole’s death. It seems likely he was wounded and died in hospital in England, hence his burial at Benwell.”
