At Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 37973 Private Henry (Harry) Woodland, serving with the 2/York and Lancaster Regiment who died 07/04/1917.

Husband of Eleanor Woodland (née Hughes) of 42 Selbourne Street, South Shields. Their marriage was registered in Gateshead during the September quarter of 1910.

In 1911 they lived at 28 Selbourne Street, South Shields. His wife, Eleanor Coxon, was born in Gateshead and died on 11 February 1961, aged 75.

He had children. His only son, Matthew, died on 11 August 1950, aged 37. His daughter , Eleanor (Ella), died on 1 January 1941, aged 24. There is a family headstone in Harton Cemetery – Section O.

He was born in Low Fell, Gateshead. He worked as a house painter (gas works) – 1911. He enlisted in South Shields. He had formerly served as 149763 Royal Field Artillery. He was not awarded the 1914-5 Star.
